John joined PennEnergy Resources in September 2011 as Chief Development Officer and Executive Vice President and was appointed to the Board of Directors of the company in October 2012. His responsibilities include all exploration & development of the Company’s upstream assets, guiding the Company’s Business Development, and is actively engaged in all corporate strategic, financial and operational decisions. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Pine Run Midstream and of Cardinal PA Midstream, both since divested.
Prior, he was Vice President-Unconventional Resources for EXCO Resources, responsible for all engineering, geology, geophysics, and all other technical aspects of the Marcellus Shale, along with their substantial business development efforts.
Mr. Johnston was previously Division Exploitation/Operations Manager for EOG Resources in Pittsburgh, responsible for the exploration, operations, and business development for EOG’s shale, CBM and development drilling efforts in the northeast and central U.S., primarily focused on the drilling and completion of horizontal Marcellus wells beginning in 2005.
Mr. Johnston was Chief Operating Officer for Energy Search, Inc., a start-up independent in the Appalachian Basin which he and the management team took public on NASDAQ in 1997, grew rapidly, and was subsequently acquired by EOG in 2001. He started as a geologist with Gulf Oil in the Permian Basin, became Geological Manager, and then worked the Gulf of Mexico with Chevron USA.
He received his undergraduate degree in Geology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and continued his geologic studies in the Master’s program at the University of Cincinnati. He is a Certified Petroleum Geologist and a member of AAPG and SPE.
Mr. Johnston is Past President and Board member of the Southeastern Ohio Oil & Gas Association, Past President of the Ohio Geological Society, Past Board Member of the North American Coalbed Methane Forum and was a Past Board Member of the Marietta College Petroleum Engineering Advisory Board.
